Naples in summer is proper southern Italian heat. July and August temperatures sit at 30 to 34 degrees Celsius, the city is loud, layered, and full of life, and the streets of the Spanish Quarters and the historic centre offer minimal shade during the middle of the day. Add the fact that most of what you want to see involves outdoor time, including the Pompeii and Herculaneum day trips, and you have a destination that requires serious heat management in your packing.
The Heat/Weather Strategy
Naples is Mediterranean heat without the tourist infrastructure of Rome or Barcelona to moderate it. The city's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is genuinely dense: narrow streets that trap heat, little organised shade, and a local culture that operates on its own schedule regardless of tourist comfort.
The standard rhythm works well: early morning for Pompeii or the Archaeological Museum, midday for a long Neapolitan lunch and rest, late afternoon and evening for wandering the Quartieri Spagnoli and the waterfront.
City-Specific Must-Haves
Sunscreen at SPF 50 is the daily essential. Pompeii is an open-air site with almost no shade: a full morning there without sun protection in August is a health risk. Apply before you leave accommodation and reapply at the site.
A wide-brim hat or cap for the archaeological sites. Pompeii and Herculaneum have stretches of exposed ground between structures where there is no shade at all.
Comfortable walking shoes with serious cushioning. Naples's streets are rough and chaotic. Pompeii involves hours of walking on ancient stone and uneven ground. Sandals with grip work in the city; proper walking shoes are better for the archaeological sites.
Lightweight, breathable clothing. Natural fabrics in light colours handle southern Italian heat well. Church dress codes apply throughout Naples: covered shoulders and knees are required for entry to the Duomo di Napoli and the many smaller churches throughout the city.
A light scarf or cotton shirt for the church visits.
Sunglasses with UV protection. The Naples waterfront and the open areas of Pompeii create intense glare.
A reusable water bottle and the intention to use it constantly. Naples heat in August is not the place to find out you are behind on hydration.
What to Leave Behind
Rain gear is unnecessary in July and August. Naples summer is hot and dry. Leave waterproof layers at home and use the space for extra sun protection.
Heavy, dark fabrics are a poor choice for this kind of heat. Pack light, stay cool, eat pizza.
Plan the Full Trip
Sun protection sorted. The guide covers the Pompeii visit without the peak-hour crowds, the best pizza in Naples (which is the actual reason to be here), and the Herculaneum versus Pompeii decision.
