Naples in June is Italy turned up to full volume. The city is loud, chaotic, and genuinely fascinating, and in June the heat amplifies everything. Pompeii and Herculaneum are accessible from the city, the pizza is as good as any on earth, and the chaos is part of the point. Come ready for it.
Weather
Expect highs of 28-32°C through June, with strong sun and low humidity by the sea. The waterfront and hilltop areas catch a breeze that makes the heat more manageable. Mornings are the time for Pompeii: the site is exposed marble in full sun, and visiting in the afternoon heat is genuinely challenging. Pack sun cream, a hat, and good walking shoes. Hydration is serious business at Pompeii in June.
Crowds and Prices
Naples doesn't get the same cruise-ship saturation as Rome or Florence, but Pompeii certainly does. The site is very busy in June, and the combination of large school groups and midday heat makes early entry (gates open at 9am) a strong recommendation. Book in advance. Naples city itself has fewer queues at major sites like the National Archaeological Museum than you might expect: it punches above its weight and below most visitors' radar.
What's On
Corpus Christi processions take place across the region in June, with the streets of Naples and surrounding towns decorated with elaborate flower carpets. It's a genuine local tradition rather than a tourist event. The city's street food scene, including fried pizza from the Quartieri Spagnoli, is active year-round but particularly good as outdoor evening walks become more pleasant.
One Thing to Watch
Pompeii in midday June heat is brutal. Start early, drink constantly, and leave by 1pm. The combination of open stone, no shade, and summer tourist volume makes an afternoon visit exhausting. If you're also planning Herculaneum (smaller, shadier, arguably better preserved), do that on a separate morning. Don't try to combine both sites in the same hot afternoon.
