Naples in February is a different proposition from the summer. The city is cold by Italian standards, the Amalfi Coast is largely shut, and the beach culture that defines the surrounding region is months away. What you get instead is the real Naples: the street life, the pizza, the underground archaeology, and the chaos of the city centre at a manageable volume. Pompeii and Herculaneum are significantly less crowded than in peak season and more atmospheric. February has a genuine case here.

Weather

February averages 5C to 12C. Rain falls regularly. The bay winds can be sharp. This is colder than tourists often expect from southern Italy. A proper mid-weight coat, layers, and waterproof shoes are all needed. Snow is rare but has occurred. The good news is that Neapolitan culture is built around staying in and eating, which makes February an entirely appropriate month for pizza and espresso.

Crowds and Prices

Low season. Pompeii is particularly rewarding in February: the site is large and atmospheric, and visitor numbers in winter allow you to walk through it at your own pace rather than in procession. The Archaeological Museum in Naples, one of the world's great museums, is quiet. Flights and hotels are cheap. Valentine's weekend has no significant impact.

What's On

Carnival is celebrated in Naples with parades and street events in the weeks before Lent. The city's theatre and music scene, centred on the Teatro San Carlo (one of Europe's oldest and finest opera houses), is in full winter season. The San Gennaro religious calendar continues through winter with various church events.

One Thing to Watch

The Amalfi Coast road towns, including Positano and Ravello, operate on very reduced winter schedules. Many hotels and restaurants there close entirely from November to March. If an Amalfi day trip is part of your plan, verify that specific towns and establishments are open before committing to the journey. In February, it can be quiet to the point of closure.
