September is one of the best months to visit Naples. The extreme summer heat eases from mid-month, the tourists doing the Amalfi Coast route in July and August have thinned out, and the city's chaotic, intensely alive street life becomes something to lean into rather than endure.
Weather
Early September in Naples still reaches 28 to 30°C. By late September it drops to around 22 to 26°C, which is warm and very comfortable for walking the city's dense, noisy, fascinating streets. The sea at Posillipo and on the Amalfi Coast remains warm for swimming through most of September. Pack light summer clothes with a layer for evenings, and good walking shoes for the uneven streets of the Spaccanapoli area.
Crowds and Prices
Naples doesn't have the same overtourism issues as the Amalfi towns or Capri. The city absorbs visitors into its own velocity rather than being overwhelmed by them. That said, September reduces the foreign visitor volume noticeably from August and makes the National Archaeological Museum, the Duomo, and the underground Napoli Sotterranea circuits more comfortable. Day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Capri are significantly better from mid-September when the peak summer coaches clear.
What's On
The Piedigrotta festival in Naples typically falls in September, with music, processions, and fireworks in the Mergellina area. It's one of the city's traditional September celebrations. The harvest season in the Campania region, including the San Marzano tomato harvest near Salerno, happens in late September. Winemakers in the Vesuvius slopes and the Caserta area are active through the month.
One Thing to Watch
The Pompeii and Herculaneum booking situation has improved but still rewards planning. Pompeii in particular can be exhaustingly hot in July and August, and September morning visits before 11 AM are considerably more pleasant. Buy timed entry tickets online before you go; the walk-up queue can be long even in September. Herculaneum is smaller, less crowded, and arguably more impressive per square metre. Consider doing both.
