Naples in January is an honest-value city break. It's not warm, but it's mild compared to northern Europe, the pizza is the same year-round, the National Archaeological Museum is excellent, and you'll find the city's famous energy without fighting tourist crowds at the historic centre.

Weather

Daytime temperatures average 12°C to 15°C in January, with cool evenings around 6°C to 8°C. Rain is possible and the city can feel grey and damp on bad days. A mid-weight jacket and layers are sufficient for most days. The views of Vesuvius across the bay are often clearest in winter.

Crowds and Prices

January is low season. The historic centre, the waterfront, and Pompeii are significantly quieter than in summer. Pompeii in January means you can actually explore the site without navigating around tour groups. Hotel prices in the city drop noticeably.

What's On

Naples doesn't have a major January-specific event, but the Christmas season traditions extend into early January with the Presepe (nativity scene) tradition, for which Naples is particularly famous. The city's Christmas cribs, some of enormous elaborateness, are on display in the San Gregorio Armeno area through January.

One Thing to Watch

Ferry connections to Capri and Ischia reduce significantly in January, and some services stop entirely depending on weather. If island day trips are part of your plan, check ferry availability in advance and have a backup.

Our Naples guide covers the city, Pompeii, and how to plan the surrounding region efficiently.
