Naples in autumn is the city at something close to its best. The suffocating summer heat breaks in September, the Pompeii queues shorten, and the pizza -- which has no season -- continues at its usual extraordinary standard. October is a genuinely strong window: comfortable temperatures, good light for the waterfront views, and enough tourist activity that the city operates fully without feeling overrun. November stays mild by most European standards, though evenings cool and rain visits more regularly. Packing for it is not complicated.

The Autumn Layering Problem

September in Naples averages 26-29 degrees during the day with warm evenings. October drops to 19-23 degrees, still very comfortable, ideal for walking the centro storico and the Spaccanapoli. November sits at 13-17 degrees with some rain and genuinely cooler evenings around 9-11 degrees.

The waterfront position creates an evening breeze off the Gulf of Naples that amplifies the cool feeling, particularly on the Lungomare and the Posillipo promenade. A pleasant October afternoon at an outdoor restaurant becomes distinctly chilly once the sun drops behind Vesuvius.

Naples-Specific Essentials

A reliable evening layer. A light wool jumper, a smart jacket, or a cardigan handles the waterfront evening temperature drop in September and becomes your October all-day companion. By November this goes under a proper outer layer.

Comfortable shoes for the centro storico. Naples' historic centre is UNESCO-listed and very walkable, but the streets are narrow, uneven, and often busy. Comfortable shoes with grip handle the wet basalt streets (which get very slippery after rain) and the long walking days between the Duomo, the waterfront, and the National Archaeological Museum.

Pompeii-appropriate footwear. Pompeii involves hours of walking on uneven ancient stone. Cushioned walking shoes or trainers with good soles are essential. The site is large and exposed to sun -- a hat and sunscreen in September and October are appropriate.

Sun protection for September and October. The Mediterranean UV index remains high through October in southern Italy. Sunscreen and sunglasses are not just for September.

A waterproof layer for November. Naples sees more rain in November. A packable rain jacket or a sturdy umbrella handles the occasional shower that arrives with some of the greyer November days.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy winter layers. Naples in November is still mild by northern European standards. A medium jacket and a warm layer underneath are plenty.

Heeled shoes. The basalt streets of the centro storico are beautiful and treacherous in the wet. Leave heels for other cities.

Only summer fabrics for October and November trips. September daywear is summer. October and November evenings require a proper layer.

Naples Autumn Unlocks the Full Experience

Pompeii in October without summer heat, the Amalfi Coast accessible by ferry in pleasant conditions, the pizza culture at its year-round extraordinary standard -- Naples in autumn is one of southern Italy's strongest arguments. Pack for the evenings and the archaeological sites and the city takes care of the rest.
