April is an excellent month for Naples. The city is warm and energetic, Vesuvius looks dramatic across the bay, and the pizza is as good as it is in any other month, which is to say: the best in the world. Easter is a significant event in deeply Catholic Naples. Pompeii and Herculaneum are accessible without summer heat, which matters when you are walking around ancient ruins.
Weather
April in Naples sees daytime temperatures of 16C to 20C, with mild evenings around 10C. Sunshine is common, with some spring showers. The Amalfi Coast day trip from Naples (Sorrento, Positano) is possible and enjoyable in April, before the coastal roads become gridlocked in summer. Pack a light jacket and layers; the Campanian spring is warm but the evenings can be cool on the waterfront.
Crowds and Prices
Naples is not overwhelmed by tourists in the way Rome or Florence are, but it is busier than its reputation sometimes suggests. April is shoulder season, busy but manageable. Pompeii is busy year-round and particularly so over Easter. Herculaneum is smaller and less crowded as an alternative. Hotel prices in Naples city centre are lower than Rome for comparable quality.
What's On
Easter in Naples is a deeply felt Catholic celebration. The Procession of the Virgin Mary's Seven Sorrows (Good Friday) through the Spaccanapoli area is one of the city's most moving events. The Liquefaction of San Gennaro's Blood, one of Naples' most famous religious events, takes place three times a year: the first Saturday in May, 19 September, and 16 December. April visits miss it by days in some years.
One Thing to Watch
Pompeii requires planning. Timed entry tickets are available online and recommended, especially over Easter. The site is large and benefits from a few hours with a map or audio guide. April heat is manageable but wear sunscreen and bring water: there is minimal shade. If Pompeii and Herculaneum are both on your list, they can be combined in a full day from Naples.
