May is one of the best months to visit Naples. The weather is warm and sunny, the pizza is still the best in the world, and you're visiting before the serious summer heat and the peak tourist season that fills Pompeii to capacity. Naples rewards visitors who arrive prepared and without the expectation that it will behave like other Italian cities. It doesn't, and that's the point.

Weather

Temperatures range from 16°C to 24°C in May. Warm, mostly sunny conditions prevail, with the occasional rain shower. It's excellent sightseeing weather: warm enough to enjoy the outdoor life but not yet the relentless heat of July. Pack light layers and comfortable walking shoes for the city's uneven streets.

Crowds and Prices

Naples has grown as a tourist destination but remains less crowded than Rome and Florence. May brings more visitors, particularly to Pompeii, but the city itself is manageable. Accommodation is very affordable by Italian standards. The historic centre, the Spaccanapoli and the Quartieri Spagnoli, are best explored on foot, and May gives you the weather to do that comfortably.

What's On

1 May is a public holiday in Italy. Some businesses close in the morning but Naples generally keeps going.

Naples FC, one of Italy's most passionately supported clubs, regularly plays through May as the Serie A season finishes. A home match at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium is an experience unlike any other in football, and the city's relationship with Maradona remains one of sport's most extraordinary stories. Check the fixture list before you book.

One Thing to Watch

Pompeii is the most visited archaeological site in Italy and May crowds, while below summer levels, are still significant by late morning. Get there when it opens, ideally before 9am, and start with the areas furthest from the entrance. The site is huge, genuinely overwhelming in scale, and deserves several hours. A guided tour adds context that raw exploration can't replace. Book both your entry and a guide in advance.
