Naples in October is one of Italy's most rewarding city break experiences and it doesn't get nearly enough attention for it. The summer heat dissipates, the chaotic traffic and queues at Pompeii thin out, and the city's extraordinary food culture, the best pizza on earth, the fried street food, the markets, continues at full pace. October in Naples rewards the curious traveller.

Weather

Early October sits around 20-24°C, which is comfortable for everything: walking the historic centre, exploring Pompeii and Herculaneum, and taking the ferry to Capri (which remains beautiful in early October even as the summer crowds leave). Late October cools to 16-19°C with occasional rain. The Gulf of Naples in October light is genuinely beautiful: cleaner air than summer, better visibility, and a golden quality to the late afternoon.

Crowds and Prices

Significantly quieter than the summer peak. Naples is genuinely chaotic at its busiest and October gives you a version of the city that's still fully alive but not overwhelming. Pompeii, which can feel like a human conveyor belt in July, is much more manageable in October. Hotel prices drop, the airport is calmer, and the city's world-famous pizzerias have shorter queues at peak times.

What's On

The Napoli Pizza Village has usually run in summer, but Naples' food culture needs no scheduled event to be extraordinary in October. The Amalfi Coast, a day trip or short drive from Naples, is at its best in October: still warm enough to enjoy, dramatically less crowded, and the coastal villages have returned to local life. The cliffside paths and boat trips are significantly better without summer numbers.

One Thing to Watch

Herculaneum often gets overlooked in favour of Pompeii, but it's the better experience: smaller, better preserved, and far less crowded. In October the contrast with Pompeii's relative quietness makes Herculaneum even more rewarding. Both are accessible from Naples' Circumvesuviana train. If you're visiting either site, morning visits are still recommended in October for the best light and the most comfortable temperatures on the exposed site.
