Naples in August is an intense experience even by Naples standards. The city is hot, the streets are busier than usual with tourists compensating for the Neapolitan residents who've gone to the beach, and Ferragosto on 15 August means a portion of the famous pizzerias and local restaurants close for a period.
That said, Naples retains its essential character in August. The pizza is still extraordinary. The Spaccanapoli is still electrifying. The National Archaeological Museum still houses the finest collection of Roman artefacts in the world.
Weather
August averages 32 to 35 degrees Celsius in Naples, with high humidity from the Bay of Naples. The city's narrow historic centre streets trap heat. The elevated areas around Vomero and Posillipo benefit from sea breezes. Morning hours before 10 AM are the practical window for walking the historic centre.
The Bay of Naples coast and the nearby islands of Ischia and Procida are at their best in August for swimming, though they're also at their most crowded.
Crowds and Prices
Naples receives fewer international visitors than Rome or Florence, which means August crowds are significant but not at the overwhelming level of those cities. The National Archaeological Museum requires advance booking in peak season, particularly for the Secret Cabinet. Pompeii, a 35-minute train ride from Naples on the Circumvesuviana line, requires online booking and is extremely crowded in August; go for the first entry slot at 9 AM.
Hotel prices are elevated. The historic centre (Centro Storico) and Chiaia neighbourhoods both have good options at various price points.
What's On
Naples has no single flagship August event, but the city's own street life, the evening passeggiata along Via Chiaia and the waterfront, the fish restaurants around Borgo Marinari at the base of Castel dell'Ovo, and the daily theatre of the Quartieri Spagnoli, is its own programme.
The Feast of the Assumption on 15 August, Ferragosto, is a public holiday with church services and street celebrations in some neighbourhoods.
One Thing to Watch
Ferragosto in Naples is particularly acute. On 15 August and the surrounding days, many of the most celebrated pizzerias, including some on the classic "best pizza in Naples" lists, close entirely. The tourist-facing pizzerias around Piazza del Gesu and the tourist circuit stay open, but if you've planned a specific pilgrimage to a particular pizzeria, verify it's open before you arrive.
