Naples in March is genuinely excellent. The city is at its most accessible: comfortable temperatures, manageable crowds at Pompeii and the Archaeological Museum, and a pizza and street food scene that operates at full capacity year-round. March is the start of spring in southern Italy, and Naples, a city that does not do half-measures, wears it well.
Weather
March temperatures in Naples range from 8°C at night to 14°C to 16°C during the day. Sunshine is common but rain is a real part of the picture, particularly early in the month. A light jacket and a waterproof layer are sufficient. By late March, temperatures regularly hit 18°C to 19°C on good afternoons, and the waterfront and the Spaccanapoli are excellent for long walks. The sea is still cold, so swimming is not the agenda, but everything else is in full operation.
Crowds and Prices
March is solidly shoulder season for Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Pompeii and Herculaneum are accessible without the August queues, and the National Archaeological Museum is quiet enough to spend proper time with the Farnese collection and the Secret Cabinet. Hotels in Naples city centre, Chiaia, and the Lungomare are priced below peak summer rates.## What's On
Easter, when it falls in late March, brings some of the most atmospheric religious processions in Italy to the streets of Naples. The city's devout street culture is on full display during Holy Week. Outside of Easter, March is a quiet event month, though Naples' Carnival celebrations carry into early March in some neighbourhoods. Day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Amalfi Coast are all viable in March with manageable crowds.
One Thing to Watch
The Amalfi Coast road in March is operational but some hotels and restaurants in Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi are still closed from their winter break. If a specific Amalfi restaurant or hotel is part of your plan, confirm it is open before building your itinerary around it. SITA buses connect Naples to the Amalfi Coast year-round, though services are less frequent than in summer.
Our Naples travel guide covers the city's neighbourhoods, Pompeii logistics, the pizza trail, and the Amalfi Coast day trip options.
