Venice in November is the city at its most cinematic and its most practically challenging. The summer hordes are gone. The low mist sits over the Grand Canal. The light across San Marco is extraordinary in the grey morning quiet. And then the acqua alta siren sounds and you need to be on a raised platform or in rubber boots. This is Venice being completely and unapologetically itself.

Weather

Temperatures range from 5°C to 11°C through November, with frequent mist, grey skies, and some rain. The dampness is pervasive: this is a city built on water and November makes that inescapable. Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and if you're planning to stay through an acqua alta event, either waterproof boots or the rubber boot covers sold throughout the city.

Crowds and Prices

Deep low season. Venice hotel prices drop substantially in November, including properties along the Grand Canal and near San Marco that are prohibitively expensive in summer. The Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica are manageable. The vaporetto water buses still need a little patience at peak times, but you're not squeezing on behind three tour groups.

What's On

The Feast of the Madonna della Salute on November 21 is a significant Venetian religious and cultural event. A temporary pontoon bridge is constructed across the Grand Canal, connecting Santa Maria del Giglio to the Salute church, and Venetians cross in procession to give thanks at the church built after the plague of 1630. It's one of the most genuinely Venetian events of the year and worth being in the city for.

One Thing to Watch

Acqua alta is at its peak in November. High tides flood the low-lying areas of Venice, including parts of San Marco, and can rise significantly in storm conditions. The city operates an excellent early warning system with sirens and the acqua alta forecast published 24 hours in advance. Check the Centro Previsioni e Segnalazioni Maree website daily. Pack rubber boots or boot covers, and accept that some days you'll be navigating the elevated passerelle (wooden walkways) rather than the regular street level.
