Venice in July is the city at its most challenging and most magnificent simultaneously. The crowds at St Mark's Basilica and the Rialto Bridge are real; so is the potential for canal smell in hot, low-water conditions. But the light on the lagoon at 6am, the quiet of the back canals past the tourist circuit, and the gondola routes through narrow campielli that tourists never find are all still there. Venice rewards the visitor who takes it seriously.

Weather

Temperatures average 27°C to 30°C with significant humidity from the lagoon. The heat index in July makes it feel closer to 34°C to 36°C in the more exposed areas of San Marco and the Rialto. The narrow calli trap heat and have little airflow. Early morning, before 9am, is genuinely cool and the best window for San Marco, the Doge's Palace, and the Rialto market. Low lagoon water levels in summer can create unpleasant odours in certain canals; this is genuine and variable. Evenings cool to around 20°C and the city's bars and campo squares come alive.

Crowds and Prices

July is one of Venice's most visited months. St Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge, and the area around the main vaporetto stops are extremely busy throughout the day. The city's day-tripper problem is most acute in July; cruise ship passengers add thousands of visitors to the island who aren't staying overnight. Hotels in Cannaregio and Dorsoduro are significantly better value than the San Marco zone and offer more authentic access to the city. The Venice Film Festival begins in late August but summer accommodation bookings build from July; book well ahead.

What's On

The Redentore festival falls in the third week of July, one of Venice's most important traditional celebrations. The city builds a pontoon bridge across the Giudecca canal, boats gather on the lagoon, and fireworks over the water are spectacular. This is the local Venice that survives alongside the tourist city. The Biennale contemporary art exhibition runs in summer years from June through November; the Arsenale and Giardini venues are worth a half-day.

One Thing to Watch

The crowds on the Riva degli Schiavoni and at the Rialto vaporetto stop in July midday are not just uncomfortable; they can make boarding the water bus nearly impossible during rush periods. Avoid vaporetto stops at peak tourist times (10am to 12pm, 3pm to 5pm) and use the traghetti gondola ferries across the Grand Canal at non-tourist crossings. Walking is always faster in Venice than waiting for a vaporetto in July.

Our Venice travel guide covers the sestieri, the logistics, and how to spend time in Venice that the day-trippers never find.
