Venice in May: What to Expect

Venice in May is stunning and busy. There's no other way to frame it. The city is extraordinary and it knows it, which means it charges accordingly and fills up accordingly. May is better than July and August, but the gap is smaller than it used to be. Venice has become one of Europe's most visited cities year-round, and May is firmly in the tourist season. Crowds and Prices

May is popular and prices reflect it. Hotels in Venice are expensive at the best of times. The concentration of visitors in the city's limited space, particularly around San Marco, the Rialto Bridge, and the main vaporetto lines, is significant. The crowds are manageable if you stay in less-visited sestieri like Dorsoduro or Cannaregio rather than booking the closest hotel to San Marco. Day-trippers from cruise ships and trains add to the volume during the middle of the day.

Venice Biennale (Art) runs in odd-numbered years and typically opens in late April, making May a full Biennale month in those years. It's one of the world's most significant art exhibitions and a compelling reason to visit. Entry to the main Giardini and Arsenale venues requires separate tickets. Festa della Sensa, Venice's Ascension Day celebration of the city's historic marriage to the sea, takes place in May with a ceremonial gondola procession from the Piazza San Marco to the lagoon. It's one of the city's more distinctive annual rituals.

Day visitor fees are now charged for entry to Venice during peak periods. The city introduced a day entry fee for tourists arriving between certain hours on busy days.
