April in Venice is genuinely beautiful and genuinely busy. The city looks extraordinary in spring light and the weather is near-ideal for walking the calle (streets) and taking the vaporetto. It is also the point at which cruise ships begin arriving in meaningful numbers and day-trippers from the mainland start filling the main routes. Venice rewards visitors who understand this and plan around it.
Weather
April in Venice sees daytime temperatures of 14C to 18C, with mild evenings around 8C. The acqua alta (high water) flooding that characterises winter Venice becomes less frequent in April. Sunshine is common. Spring is one of the best times to be on the water: the light on the lagoon and the Grand Canal is excellent. Pack light layers and comfortable walking shoes; Venice involves a lot of walking on uneven stone.
Crowds and Prices
Venice is one of Europe's most pressured cities for visitor management. April is busy and getting busier. Easter is the most intense crowd period: day-tripper numbers from the mainland combine with international visitors and the city's small physical size becomes acutely apparent. The key insight for Venice is the time of day: arrive early, stay late, and avoid the 11am to 4pm peak.
What's On
Venice celebrates the Feast of St. Mark (25 April) as its patron saint day: it is also Italian Liberation Day, a public holiday. The Venice Biennale (art and architecture, in alternate years) typically opens in April or May: check if it is a Biennale year for your visit. The Vogalonga rowing event is in May but the preparatory training on the lagoon is visible in April.
One Thing to Watch
Day-trippers. Venice introduced a tourist access fee for day visitors in 2024, which applies on busy days (primarily weekends and public holidays in spring and summer). Check the current status before you visit. If you are staying overnight, you are exempt. The fee was designed to manage the peak day-tripper flow, and staying at least one night gives you both the exemption and the experience of Venice at dawn and dusk, when it is genuinely magical.
