Venice in March is one of the best months for the city. Carnival ends in late February, leaving behind a quieter, less costumed Venice for the rest of the month. Visitor numbers are below the spring and summer peaks, the sestieri (neighbourhoods) away from San Marco are genuinely peaceful, and the vaporetto is manageable. March gives you Venice as a city rather than Venice as a tourist queue.

Weather

March in Venice ranges from 5°C to 7°C at night to 12°C to 14°C during the day. Rain is common and the city's famous acqua alta (high water) flooding can still occur in early March, though it is less frequent than in winter. A waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes (waterproof is ideal), and layers are essential. Late March can bring lovely sunny stretches with temperatures reaching 16°C to 17°C, and the light on the canals in spring is exceptional.

Crowds and Prices

Carnival ends in late February, so March offers Venice without the masks and the associated tourist concentration. The Doge's Palace, the Basilica di San Marco, and the Rialto Bridge area are busy but not at summer levels. The main tourist trail from San Marco to the Accademia is walkable without the shoulder-to-shoulder experience of July. Hotels in Dorsoduro, Cannaregio, and Castello are priced below peak season. If Easter falls in late March, expect a significant surge over the long weekend.

What's On

The Venice Biennale runs in odd years and typically opens in April, though some preparatory exhibitions and events may appear in late March. Check the specific year's calendar. Venice's quieter cultural life, chamber concerts in historic palazzi, evening gondola singing, and the permanent collection at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, runs year-round. Spring brings longer operating hours to some smaller museums and churches that reduce their winter hours.

One Thing to Watch

Acqua alta can still occur in March, though frequency decreases from the November to January peak. If flooding does occur, temporary raised walkways (passerelle) are installed on the main routes. It is not typically a trip-ruining event and locals navigate it with boots and practicality. Check the Centro Maree Venice tide forecast app before heading out on days when acqua alta is possible. Having waterproof boots or shoe covers on hand is sensible for early March visits.
