Venice in autumn has a particular quality that summer never achieves. The cruise ship crowds thin after September, the light across the lagoon shifts to something photographers spend careers chasing, and the city's extraordinary architecture becomes actually walkable without the peak-season pressure. There is one very specific packing consideration that distinguishes Venice from every other European city: acqua alta. The high water flooding that affects the lowest-lying parts of the city -- primarily around San Marco -- begins in October and runs through to spring. Your footwear needs to account for this.
The Autumn Layering Problem
September in Venice averages 23-27 degrees during the day with warm evenings. October drops to 16-20 degrees with the lagoon creating a dampness in the air that makes it feel slightly cooler than the temperature reading. November sits at 9-13 degrees with frequent cloud, some rain, and the real possibility of acqua alta events reaching areas beyond San Marco.
The lagoon position means Venice has its own microclimate. Mist on the canals in October and November mornings is atmospheric but also damp. Wind off the lagoon on the Riva degli Schiavoni and the open campos amplifies the cool feeling significantly.
Venice-Specific Essentials
Waterproof boots that reach above the ankle. This is the Venice-specific packing rule. Acqua alta events in October and November flood the San Marco area and some surrounding campos. Rubber ankle boots, short wellies, or genuinely waterproof leather boots that reach above the water level protect your feet and shoes from the lagoon water. Disposable plastic overshoes sold in Venice are a tourist-trap workaround -- waterproof boots from home are the better solution.
A reliable mid-layer for evenings. A light wool jumper or a smart jacket handles the lagoon evening temperature drop in September and becomes your October all-day companion. Evenings on the Rialto bridge and the San Polo campos are cool from October.
A waterproof outer layer for November. Venice November rain arrives regularly. A packable rain jacket or a compact umbrella handles the rain that accompanies the greyer November days.
Comfortable walking shoes as backup. For dry days and areas away from the acqua alta risk, comfortable trainers or leather shoes with grip handle the bridges, campo steps, and boat boarding platforms that characterise movement around Venice.
Layers for the vaporetto. The vaporetto water buses are the main transport. They are covered and sometimes heated, sometimes cold. Layers that can be adjusted easily work better than a single heavy garment.
Modest clothing for the Basilica di San Marco and churches. Shoulders and knees covered. A scarf in your bag handles the requirement.
What to Leave Behind
Wheeled suitcases. Seriously. Venice has no flat routes between the train station and most hotels -- only bridges with steps. A bag you can carry is a practical necessity, not a preference.
Sandals. September is the last viable moment. From October, waterproof footwear is the practical choice.
Fashion footwear for October and November. Acqua alta does not care about your shoe choices. Waterproof boots are the answer.
Venice Autumn Rewards the Right Preparation
The city without its summer crowd, the acqua alta handled by proper boots, the November mist rising off the canals -- Venice in autumn is the version of the city that belongs to the people who came prepared. Pack for the lagoon and its conditions and the experience is genuinely extraordinary.
