Venice in June is both magnificent and genuinely challenging. The city is one of the most beautiful in the world, the canals are at their most photogenic in summer light, and it's also among the most crowded destinations on the planet in peak season. June is high season. Come with a plan.
Weather
Expect highs of 26-29°C through June, with humidity from the lagoon making it feel warmer. Rain is possible but June is generally dry. Evenings are warm and the city is spectacular after dark when most day-trippers have left. Pack light summer clothes and good walking shoes that can handle uneven stone bridges and calli. The city's streets and bridges are unyielding on poor footwear.
Crowds and Prices
Venice has introduced a day visitor entry fee system for peak periods to manage tourist numbers, so check current requirements before you visit. The city is extremely busy from mid-morning. The day-tripper exodus happens in late afternoon, and Venice from 7pm onwards is a different and much better experience. Staying overnight rather than day-tripping is strongly recommended: you'll see a city that day visitors never encounter.
What's On
The Venice Biennale art exhibition runs in odd-numbered years from May through November, turning the Giardini and Arsenale into one of the world's major contemporary art events. In June-running Biennale years, this adds significant cultural weight to the city and also adds to crowd volumes. The Vogalonga, a non-competitive rowing event through Venice's canals, takes place in late May or early June and is a genuine spectacle.
One Thing to Watch
The Rialto Bridge and St Mark's Square are extremely crowded through the middle of the day in June. St Mark's Square floods (acqua alta) less in summer than winter, but the Basilica is busy: timed entry is required and free tickets should be booked in advance. The vaporetto water buses are packed at tourist peak hours. Line 1 along the Grand Canal is the scenic route; lines 2 and 4.1/4.2 are faster.
The ConciseTravel Venice guide covers the sestieri, the vaporetto system, and how to experience the city before and after the day-trip crowd arrives.
