Seven days is more than enough for Galway city itself. Galway is small, walkable, and genuinely lovely, but two or three days is enough to feel like you know it. A week gives you time to do the city properly and then use the rest of the trip to explore what makes the west of Ireland so worth the journey: Connemara, the Aran Islands, the Cliffs of Moher, and the Wild Atlantic Way.
What a Week Actually Gets You
Galway city takes a day or two at a comfortable pace. Shop Street, the Latin Quarter, and the Spanish Arch area are the core of the city and walkable in an afternoon. Salthill, the seaside suburb a 20-minute walk from the centre, is worth an evening for the promenade, the swimming spots, and the pubs. The Galway City Museum is small but good context for the city's history.
The Saturday market at St. Nicholas' Church is excellent for local food and worth timing your week around if possible. The pubs in Galway are some of the best in Ireland, with live traditional music most nights.
With a week, you have time to genuinely experience the pace of life in the west of Ireland rather than just passing through. That pace is slower than you might expect, and it is one of the best things about being there.
What Still Gets Left Out
Galway as a city does not really have a "left out" problem. What you miss in seven days is the surrounding region. The Connemara National Park, the Twelve Bens mountains, and the Aran Islands each deserve a full day, and a week gives you room for all of them without rushing.
How to Structure the Week
Days 1 and 2 go to Galway city. Shop Street, the Latin Quarter, Spanish Arch, the Saturday market, Salthill in the evenings. Get comfortable with the city before heading out.
Day 3 is the Aran Islands. Ferry from Rossaveal (about 45 minutes) to Inis Mor, the largest island. Hire a bike on arrival. Dun Aengus, the Iron Age cliff fort, is the main thing to see. Return by evening.
Day 4 is Connemara. Drive or take a tour through Clifden, Kylemore Abbey, and the Connemara National Park. The scenery is some of the best in Ireland.
Day 5 is the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. About an hour south of Galway by road. Busy but genuinely impressive. Combine with the Burren landscape on the same day.
Days 6 and 7 are for whatever you want to revisit, a slower drive along the Wild Atlantic Way, or more time in Galway itself for the pubs and the music.
Plan the West of Ireland Well
Getting around the west of Ireland is easier with a car, and some of the day trips require advance booking for ferries. Our Galway guide gives you the logistics for all of it, so you spend the week exploring rather than planning.
