Galway in October requires honesty: it will almost certainly rain. The west of Ireland in autumn doesn't pretend otherwise. What October gives you is a city that's genuinely alive, with pubs that locals actually use, live music that isn't performed for tourists, and the kind of craic that Galway promises in the summer and actually delivers in the shoulder season. The rain is part of the deal and the deal is good.

Weather

Expect 10-13°C, overcast, and frequent rain. Wind off the Atlantic is a regular companion. The good news is that Galway is a small, compact city and most of its best experiences are indoor or very short walks between indoor things. A waterproof jacket is non-negotiable. The Connemara countryside outside the city looks extraordinary in October, all muted greens, low cloud, and Atlantic drama, if you get a dry window for a drive.

Crowds and Prices

Significantly quieter than summer, which in Galway terms means the city transforms. The summer festival season (Galway International Arts Festival in July, Galway Race Week in August) brings huge numbers. October is proper shoulder season: lower hotel prices, no queues, and the city feeling like a city rather than a festival site. Pubs that are packed wall-to-wall with tourists in August have space for actual conversation in October.

What's On

Halloween has deep Irish roots and Galway celebrates it enthusiastically. The city gets into the spirit with street events and pub nights that reflect the Celtic Samhain tradition from which Halloween comes. Live music continues year-round in Galway's famous pub circuit, and October is when you're likely to find more genuine sessions rather than performed-for-visitors music. The Galway Film Fleadh runs in July, but independent cinema stays active in autumn.

One Thing to Watch

Connemara is one of Ireland's most dramatic landscapes and October is arguably its best season. The bog colours are extraordinary, the light is low and atmospheric, and the usual summer campervan traffic has thinned. If you can get a car for a day, the drive through Connemara in October is one of Ireland's best experiences. Don't spend your entire Galway trip in the city without getting out into the landscape around it.
