Galway in March is lively, wet, and excellent. St Patrick's Day is the main draw: Galway's parade and pub culture around the 17th is one of the most genuine expressions of the holiday in Ireland, without the commercial scale of Dublin. The rest of March has a charming Atlantic city with low prices, a great music and food scene on Shop Street and Quay Street, and the wild Connemara landscape just outside the city.

Weather

Galway in March is classic west of Ireland: mild temperatures but rain and wind are regular companions. Expect 6°C to 11°C, with Atlantic weather patterns meaning conditions can change quickly. Rain is likely on most days, sometimes heavy. A proper waterproof jacket is not optional. The upside is that March showers tend to pass, and Galway's narrow stone streets look particularly good wet. Late March brings longer days and occasional genuine sun.

Crowds and Prices

Outside of St Patrick's Day weekend, Galway in March is quiet. The Galway International Arts Festival (summer) and the Galway Races (summer and autumn) are the city's biggest crowd events, and neither is a March factor. The Aran Islands ferry services run year-round but with reduced frequency compared to summer. Hotel and guesthouse prices are low except around 17 March, when the city books out well in advance.

What's On

St Patrick's Day is the headline event. Galway's parade through the city centre draws crowds from across Connacht and beyond, and the pub scene on Quay Street and Shop Street is exceptional throughout the festival weekend. The atmosphere is genuine and community-driven rather than corporate. Beyond Patrick's Day, the city's traditional music sessions run year-round in pubs like the Crane Bar and Tigh Coili, making any evening in March a good night out.

One Thing to Watch

St Patrick's Day accommodation in Galway books out months in advance, and prices around that weekend spike sharply. If you are visiting specifically for the 17th, book as early as possible. If you are not there for the festival, the weekend of the 15th to 17th is worth avoiding unless you are prepared for crowds and higher prices. Early or late March outside of that window is genuinely relaxed.
