Galway sits on the western edge of Ireland, directly in the path of Atlantic weather systems. This is not a city where you check the forecast and pack accordingly -- you pack for rain regardless of the forecast and consider dry weather a bonus. Autumn in Galway means exactly this: proper waterproofs, warm layers, and the understanding that the pubs and the food scene and the session music are at their best precisely because the weather drives everyone inside.

The Autumn Layering Problem

September in Galway averages 13-16 degrees with frequent showers and wind off Galway Bay. October drops to 10-13 degrees with more persistent rain and stronger Atlantic gusts. November runs 6-10 degrees, very wet, occasionally stormy, and dark by 4:30pm.

The Atlantic influence means Galway weather changes within hours. Morning sun and afternoon rain is a common pattern in September. In October and November the baseline is cloud and rain, with dry windows that you take advantage of when they arrive. The wind is the additional factor -- it turns rain sideways and makes temperatures feel lower than the reading.

Galway-Specific Essentials

A serious waterproof jacket with a good hood. This is the central item. Not a packable festival shell -- something with genuine waterproofing, wind resistance, and a hood that stays functional in gusts. This jacket gets worn every day.

Waterproof boots. The streets of Galway city centre and the Salthill promenade are manageable in good waterproof boots. The Connemara day trips that many visitors do from Galway require proper waterproofing underfoot.

Warm, moisture-wicking base layers. Merino wool is the ideal choice for Ireland's west coast climate. It stays warm when damp and dries faster than cotton. This matters when you're getting occasional rain throughout the day.

A fleece or warm mid-layer. Between the waterproof outer and a warm base, a good mid-layer rounds out the system. A thick fleece or a down gilet provides the core warmth.

Hat and scarf. Wind chill along the prom and in the streets around Shop Street is significant from October. A proper hat covering the ears and a warm scarf are packing essentials.

Dry bag or waterproof-lined backpack. Protecting your camera, phone, and wallet from the persistent damp matters. A small dry bag inside your main bag, or a waterproof backpack, solves this.

What to Leave Behind

Sandals. There is no reason to bring sandals to Galway in autumn. None.

Umbrellas as your main strategy. Atlantic gusts destroy umbrellas. A waterproof jacket is the reliable solution. A compact umbrella as a backup for still-air moments is acceptable.

Light summer layers only. Thin cotton and linen without serious outer layers are cold in Galway from the first week of September.

Formal footwear. Galway is casual. The pub, the restaurant, and the seafront all have the same dress code: warm and practical.
