Two days in Galway is more than enough for the city itself. Galway is small, walkable, and its highlights can be covered in a single full day. The smart use of a second day is a drive or trip along the Connemara coast or the Aran Islands, both of which start from Galway's doorstep.
What You Can Cover in 2 Days
Two days in Galway:
- The Latin Quarter and the medieval city. Shop Street, Quay Street, and the lanes off them form the core of Galway's old city. The Spanish Arch, the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas, and the Galway City Museum are all within walking distance of each other.
- The Long Walk and the Claddagh. The waterfront walk along the Corrib River to the sea is Galway at its most atmospheric. The Claddagh is the old fishing village now absorbed into the city.
- The pub circuit. Galway has a genuine traditional music scene that is not entirely performative. Tigh Coili, The Crane Bar, and Garavan's are all worth a night.
- Connemara or the Aran Islands on day two. Bus Eireann runs a day trip to Connemara. The Aran Islands take a ferry from Rossaveal. Both are half-days to full days depending on how deep you go.
What You'll Miss
Two days in Galway:
- The depth of the Connemara landscape. A day trip gives you a view; spending a night in Clifden or on the Aran Islands gives you the atmosphere. With two days, you're choosing one over the other.
- The Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. Over the county border in Clare, about an hour from Galway. A full day trip but a popular one.
How to Make the Most of It
- Book the Aran Islands ferry or a Connemara tour in advance. Day trip options fill up, especially in summer.
- Stay in the Latin Quarter. Galway is small enough that all of the city is walkable, but staying in the centre keeps the atmosphere and the pubs within easy reach.
- Don't miss the Saturday market. The Saturday market in St Nicholas' churchyard is one of the best food markets in Ireland. Time your visit if you can.
- Go to a pub with traditional music on the first evening. The session times vary; checking in advance saves disappointment.
The Honest Verdict
Two days in Galway covers the city comfortably and leaves room for the wild coastline that makes it worth the trip. It's a small city with an outsized character and it rewards slow time more than a packed itinerary.
