Galway in May: What to Expect

Galway in May is one of Ireland's best-kept travel secrets. The city is lively, the surrounding landscape is at its most vivid green, and you're visiting before the summer crowds that make the Latin Quarter feel like a theme park. It's a genuine Irish city with genuine Irish pub culture, and May is when it's at its most comfortable.

Weather

Expect temperatures between 9°C and 15°C. Galway sits on Ireland's west coast, which means it gets more than its share of Atlantic weather. Rain is a given at some point during your trip, often several times a day. A good waterproof is essential, and layers are smarter than packing for warmth alone. When the sun comes out, the Claddagh and the bay are stunning.

Crowds and Prices

Galway is busy year-round but May is well before peak season. Accommodation is noticeably cheaper than July and August, when the city fills up with summer festivals. The pubs are lively but not rammed, and you can walk the Spanish Arch and the Salthill promenade without queuing or squeezing. 1 May is a public holiday in Ireland, bringing a relaxed Bank Holiday atmosphere to the city. Local businesses may close but pubs and restaurants stay open, and there are usually outdoor events around Eyre Square.

Cúirt International Festival of Literature sometimes extends into early May and brings writers and readings to venues across the city. It gives Galway a bookish, intellectual energy that sits nicely alongside its more boisterous reputation.

The Galway Food Festival has historically taken place over the Easter weekend, which may fall close to May depending on the year.

One Thing to Watch

Galway is a natural base for exploring Connemara and the Aran Islands, but May weather makes day trip planning unpredictable. Aran Islands ferries can be disrupted by Atlantic swell with little warning. Check conditions the morning of any planned island trip, book flexible tickets where possible, and have a backup plan. A rain-day in Galway's pubs is not a hardship.
