Galway in summer is one of the most atmospheric places you can visit in Europe. The city is small, full of music, and positioned right on the Atlantic edge of Ireland where the weather arrives with enthusiasm. June through August brings temperatures between 14 and 18 degrees Celsius, occasional sunshine that feels genuinely warm when it arrives, and rain that the locals treat as background noise. Come for the craic. Pack for the west of Ireland.
The Heat/Weather Strategy
Galway's weather is governed by the Atlantic rather than any continental system. The prevailing westerly winds bring moisture off the ocean and create a climate that is mild, changeable, and frequently wet. Summer is the best season, but that is relative: summer here means less rain than winter, not no rain. Clear mornings that become showery afternoons are the Galway summer default setting.
The plus side: the green of County Clare and Connemara to the west is directly caused by this rain, and it is extraordinary on a good day.
City-Specific Must-Haves
A proper waterproof jacket is not optional. This is the most important item in your bag. It needs to be genuinely waterproof with a hood, not just water-resistant, because Galway's Atlantic rain arrives sideways and at pace. A packable waterproof shell you can fold into your bag handles this.
Waterproof walking shoes or light hiking boots. The Cliffs of Moher day trip from Galway involves walking on paths that are wet essentially year-round. The Connemara national park likewise. Trainers handle the city; proper waterproof footwear handles the surrounding landscape.
Warm layers. A thin fleece or merino mid-layer plus the waterproof shell is the correct combination. Evenings in Galway are cool and the Atlantic breeze does not ease up after dark. The pubs are warm but you need to get there first.
Sunscreen for the good days, which do happen. Galway on a clear summer day is as lovely as anywhere in Europe, and the UV index is higher than the cool temperature suggests.
Comfortable walking shoes for the city itself: Latin Quarter cobblestones, the long promenade at Salthill, and the streets around the Spanish Arch are all extremely walkable.
What to Leave Behind
Leave beach resort summer clothing at home. Galway is not that kind of summer. Linen suits, open sandals, and sundresses are aspirational rather than practical for this latitude.
Heavy winter gear is also unnecessary. The temperature stays mild even in evening rain. Layers work better than one heavy item.
Plan the Full Trip
Rain jacket in the bag. The guide covers the Cliffs of Moher without the tourist bus problems, the best traditional music sessions in the city, and the day trip logistics to Connemara.
