Five days in Galway city alone is too long. Galway is one of the most enjoyable small cities in Ireland, but it's compact and the city itself fills two days comfortably. Five days works brilliantly if you use Galway as a base for the west of Ireland.

What 5 Days Really Allows

Galway city is genuinely loveable: Shop Street and the Latin Quarter, the Spanish Arch, Galway Cathedral, the Long Walk by the Corrib. The pub and music scene is excellent and you should budget at least two evenings to it, not one. The Saturday market by St Nicholas' Church is one of the best in Ireland. Salthill, the seaside suburb a 20-minute walk from the centre, adds a coastal dimension.

Two days covers all of this at a comfortable pace. Five days means the remaining three are available for what surrounds Galway, and what surrounds Galway is some of the most dramatic landscape in Ireland.

When 5 Days Is Too Many for the City Alone

After two full days in Galway, there isn't much new city ground to cover. The centre is small enough to walk across in 15 minutes. A fifth day purely in Galway means sitting in the same cafes and pubs, which is genuinely pleasant but probably not what you came for. The value of five days here is entirely about what you do outside the city.

Day Trip Potential

This is the whole point of five days based in Galway.

The Aran Islands are the essential Galway day trip: a ferry from Rossaveal (or a summer boat from the docks) gets you to Inis Mor, the largest island, where the Iron Age fort of Dun Aonghasa sits on the edge of a sheer cliff above the Atlantic. It's one of the most dramatic sites in Ireland. The Cliffs of Moher and the Burren are reachable in a single day by car or bus tour from Galway: the limestone karst landscape of the Burren is unlike anywhere else in Ireland. Connemara National Park is under an hour west of Galway and one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.

If you have a hire car, the Sky Road near Clifden and the coastal route via Roundstone and Ballyconneely are worth a full day.

The Bottom Line

Five days based in Galway is excellent. Two days in the city, three days exploring the west: Aran Islands, the Cliffs, Connemara. That's a genuinely memorable trip. Our Galway guide on Etsy covers the city days so you know where to start.
