Straight answer: Galway is a small city and four days is more than the city itself needs. You could walk Galway's historic centre thoroughly in one good day. Two days is comfortable. Four days in Galway only works if you're using the city as a base for the surrounding landscape, which is one of the most spectacular in Ireland and absolutely worth your time.

What 4 Days Unlocks

Galway city is charming, walkable, and genuinely alive with music, food, and personality. Shop Street, the Latin Quarter, the Spanish Arch, the Claddagh: these are a good day. Add the cathedral, Salthill, and the beach walk, and you've got two.

The extra days belong to the countryside.

The Aran Islands are accessible by ferry from Rossaveal (or by a short flight from Connemara Airport) and offer one of the most atmospheric landscapes in Ireland: ancient stone forts, limestone pavements, cliff edges, and no cars. A full day on Inis Mór is one of the great Irish experiences.

The Connemara National Park, to the northwest of Galway, is 45 minutes by bus and has a combination of bog, mountain, and coastal scenery that stays with you. The Diamond Hill loop hike takes about two hours and the views over the Atlantic are extraordinary.

The Cliffs of Moher are 90 minutes south and can be done as a day trip combined with the Burren, the extraordinary limestone plateau that looks like another planet.

What You'll Still Miss

The Wild Atlantic Way is enormous and four days from Galway won't reach its northern extremes. Sligo, Donegal, and the far northwest are their own trip.

Kerry and the Ring of Kerry are south of the Burren and, while technically accessible from Galway, are really a different base entirely.

How to Structure 4 Days Well

Day 1: Galway city. Shop Street, the Latin Quarter, the Spanish Arch and Claddagh in the afternoon. Live music in the evening, which in Galway is not difficult to find.

Day 2: Aran Islands. Take the early ferry, spend the day on Inis Mór, come back on the late boat. Hire a bike on the island.

Day 3: Connemara. Kylemore Abbey, the Twelve Bens mountains, and a stop at Clifden for lunch. Drive or join a day tour from Galway.

Day 4: Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Another day tour is the easiest way to manage this without a car.
