September in Galway is worth going for on its own terms. The city's summer festival season has wrapped, which means slightly quieter streets, but the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival in late September is one of the most enjoyable food events on the Irish calendar.

Weather

Galway in September averages 12 to 17°C, with a reliable mix of sunshine and Atlantic rain. The west of Ireland doesn't make promises about weather, but September is not a particularly wet month by local standards. The light on Galway Bay and the Aran Islands is at its most dramatic in autumn, with fast-moving clouds and clear intervals that make the landscape look cinematic. Layers, waterproofs, and an adaptable attitude are the standard kit.

Crowds and Prices

Galway's summer sees a strong tourist crowd, with visitors using it as a base for Connemara, the Aran Islands, and the Wild Atlantic Way. The student population also returns to NUIG in late September, which changes the city's atmosphere in a positive way. Accommodation is easier to find and cheaper from mid-September. The main streets in the Latin Quarter feel more manageable, and the city's traditional music pubs return to their natural rhythm.

What's On

The Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival runs over a long weekend in late September, usually the last weekend of the month. It's been running for over sixty years and draws a serious crowd of oyster fans, seafood lovers, and people who enjoy the associated craic. The festival centres on the Claddagh and the Spanish Arch area, with outdoor oyster shucking events, live music, and a general air of convivial chaos. Book accommodation well in advance if you're planning around the festival weekend.

One Thing to Watch

The Aran Islands ferry runs year-round but September sea conditions can be variable. On a calm day the ferry crossing from Rossaveal to Inis Mor is easy and the island is excellent. On a choppy Atlantic day it's rough enough to be unpleasant if you don't have sea legs. Check conditions before booking the ferry, and know that the small plane option from Connemara Airport is considerably more comfortable in bad weather.
