Seville in May is caught between the tail end of its ideal season and the beginning of its challenging one. Early May can be genuinely excellent: the Feria de Abril sometimes bleeds into May, the weather is warm but not yet brutal, and the city is buzzing. By late May, temperatures are rising towards 30°C and the summer heat that makes midday outdoor activity uncomfortable is beginning to establish itself. Time your trip for early May if you can.

Weather

Temperatures range from 18°C to 30°C in May, with the upper end increasingly common towards the end of the month. Sunshine is almost guaranteed. Seville is one of the hottest cities in Europe by summer, and May is the transition point. Lightweight, breathable clothing is essential. The shade of the Barrio Santa Cruz's narrow streets and the Alcazar gardens are practical necessities, not just pleasant extras.

Crowds and Prices

Seville is popular year-round but the spring shoulder season in early May is excellent value compared to peak summer. The Real Alcazar requires advance booking and tickets sell out in summer. In May, you can usually book a few days ahead, but don't rely on walking up. Hotel prices are below summer levels in early May but rising sharply by the end of the month.

What's On

Feria de Abril is Seville's most celebrated festival, traditionally held two weeks after Easter, which sometimes places it partially in May depending on the year. If your visit catches the Feria, it's one of Europe's most spectacular celebrations: horses, flamenco dresses, casetas (private tents with music and sherry), and a city genuinely transformed. Check the dates before you book, as the Feria has a significant effect on accommodation availability and prices.

1 May is a public holiday in Spain with outdoor events across the city.

One Thing to Watch

Heat management is the critical skill in Seville from May onwards. The city operates on a natural rhythm that makes sense once you understand it: slow mornings, active late morning and early evening, long afternoon rest during peak heat, then the city comes alive again from around 7pm. Work with that rhythm, not against it. Planning a packed afternoon itinerary in late May heat in the open plazas is how you spend your evening recovering in the hotel.
