Seville in August is the hottest major tourist city in Europe. Temperatures regularly reach 40 to 42 degrees Celsius, sometimes 45. The Andalusian sun is vertical, the streets are narrow, and the heat coming off the paving stones adds to the ambient temperature from above. This is not an exaggeration, and it's worth stating plainly: visiting Seville in August requires serious heat management.
The city itself, like the rest of Andalusia, has developed its own relationship with August heat over centuries. Locals sleep until late, eat lunch at 3 PM, nap until 6, and live their evenings from 8 PM until 2 AM. If you adopt this rhythm, Seville in August works.
Weather
Average August highs sit at 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, with peaks regularly above 42. Humidity is lower than coastal cities, which helps, but the raw temperature is unambiguous. Morning sightseeing before 10 AM is the practical window. The Real Alcazar, the Cathedral, and the Giralda tower are all best visited early. After 10 AM, any prolonged outdoor exposure becomes a physical challenge.
The evenings are the reward. Seville after 9 PM in August, when the heat has dropped to a manageable 28 degrees and the tapas bars are at full energy, is genuinely one of the great evening experiences in Europe.
Crowds and Prices
Seville is actually quieter in August than in April (Feria de Abril) or Semana Santa, as many Spanish visitors avoid the extreme heat. International tourists fill the gap, making the major sites busy but not overwhelmingly so. Hotel prices drop in August compared to spring, because Spanish domestic tourism has moved to the coast.
What's On
No major festival in August. The city's primary celebrations are Semana Santa in spring and Feria in April. August nightlife, however, is excellent: outdoor flamenco performances, rooftop bars with Cathedral views, and tapas crawls through the El Arenal and Triana barrios.
One Thing to Watch
The Real Alcazar and Seville Cathedral both reach their queue peaks between 10 AM and 1 PM in August. Book online in advance (the Real Alcazar particularly) and choose the first entry slot. Visiting the Alcazar gardens in the morning before they heat up is one of August Seville's best experiences. By noon, the gardens are difficult.
