Seville in December is one of Europe's most sensible winter city break options. The temperatures are among the mildest of any major European city in this month, prices are low, and the Alcazar and cathedral are accessible without the summer crowds and heat. Spanish cities don't do Christmas in the German or Austrian mould, but Seville has its own December atmosphere, and the run-up to Christmas and into January for Reyes is genuinely festive.
Weather
Mild and sometimes sunny. Seville in December averages 10°C to 17°C during the day, with cool evenings around 6°C to 8°C. Rain is possible, with December being one of the wetter months, but sunny days are common and the temperatures feel warm by northern European standards. A light jacket and layers cover most situations. The Alcazar gardens are pleasant to walk in December without the summer heat making the experience uncomfortable.
Crowds and Prices
Cheap and quiet. This is consistently one of the best-value months to visit Seville. Flights from the UK are inexpensive, accommodation is affordable, and the Alcazar, the Cathedral, and the Barrio de Santa Cruz are accessible at a sensible pace. The Alcazar requires advance booking as a timed entry, but December slots are plentiful compared to summer. The tapas bars in the Triana neighbourhood and around the Alameda de Hércules are operating normally and not overrun with tourists.
What's On
Seville's Christmas lights on the Calle Sierpes and the main commercial streets are switched on from early December and are genuinely impressive by any European standard. The city's nativity tradition is strong: elaborate nativity scenes go up in churches, museums, and public spaces throughout December. The Feria de Navidad in the Plaza de San Francisco and around the Cathedral area is a modest Christmas market with local food and crafts. The real December draw in Seville is the food: tapas culture here doesn't change with the season, and the cooler temperatures make long walks between tapas bars significantly more pleasant than in summer.
One Thing to Watch
The Alcazar gardens are subject to a separate entry fee and have timed access. The site overall is one of Seville's most-visited, and even in December, going without a pre-booked timed entry is a gamble. Book the Alcazar online before you travel rather than hoping for walk-up availability on the day.
