San Francisco is a compact city for the US, and one day gives you a solid introduction to its most distinctive neighbourhoods and views. The hills, the fog, the bay, and the mix of cultures all contribute to a city that feels entirely unlike anywhere else in America.
Getting In and Out
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is around 30 minutes from downtown by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Oakland Airport (OAK) is around 45 minutes by BART. The connections are reliable and inexpensive. BART doesn't cover all of San Francisco, but it's the best way to get in from the airport.
Morning
The Golden Gate Bridge is the priority. Walk it from the San Francisco side to the Marin County side and back: around 45 minutes each way depending on your pace. The views from the bridge of the bay, Alcatraz, and the city are what San Francisco looks like in your imagination. Go in the morning when the light is better and the fog has (sometimes) lifted.
Back in the city, walk or take the cable car to North Beach. The neighbourhood is San Francisco's Italian-American heart and the home of the Beat Generation. City Lights Bookstore on Columbus Avenue is both a working bookshop and a literary landmark.
Afternoon
The Mission District is the best afternoon neighbourhood. Take the BART to 16th Street Mission station. Dolores Park is where locals gather; the streets around 24th Street have the city's best tacos and Mexican food at any price point. The Mission murals on the buildings around Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley are worth seeking out.
Lunch anywhere on or near 24th Street: carnitas tacos, burritos, or pupusas from the taquerias and street stalls are the right food for this neighbourhood.
If you have time after the Mission, Haight-Ashbury is 20 minutes by bus: the psychedelic 1960s neighbourhood is now mostly a tourist-facing shopping street but the Victorian architecture is impressive and the area still has character.
Evening (if time allows)
Fisherman's Wharf is touristy but the sourdough bread bowls and Dungeness crab in season are genuinely good and authentically San Franciscan. Pier 39 is the sea lion spot.
A ferry from the Ferry Building to Sausalito and back (around 30 minutes each way) gives you the best view of the San Francisco skyline from the water at any time of day.
What to Skip
Alcatraz is excellent but requires advance booking (often days or weeks ahead) and takes most of a morning or afternoon. Don't add it spontaneously.
Silicon Valley day trips require a car and most of the interesting locations aren't publicly accessible. Skip it.
