San Francisco in March is underrated. The summer fog and heat are months away, crowds at Alcatraz and the Golden Gate are thinner than in July, and the city's neighbourhoods, Mission District, Haight-Ashbury, the Castro, and North Beach, are all fully alive without the peak-season density. March is when locals feel the city is theirs again, and visitors who come in March share that feeling.
Weather
March in San Francisco is famously unpredictable. Temperatures range from 9°C at night to 14°C to 16°C during the day. The city's micro-climate means that the Sunset District can be 10°C and foggy while the Mission is 18°C and sunny simultaneously. A light jacket and layers are essential. Rain is possible, particularly in early March, as the rainy season tapers through spring. By late March, sunny days are more frequent and the city's parks are excellent.
Crowds and Prices
March is shoulder season for San Francisco. Alcatraz tours are easier to book than in summer (though still requiring advance reservation), Fisherman's Wharf and the Ferry Building are less packed, and the cable cars have manageable wait times compared to July. Hotels in Union Square, the Embarcadero, and the Mission are priced below summer rates. The city is always busy, but March keeps visitor density at a sensible level.
What's On
St Patrick's Day (17 March) has a well-attended parade through the city and the Irish bars in the Tenderloin and along Geary Street are lively. San Francisco's Pride events are in June, so not a March factor. The San Francisco International Film Festival typically runs in April, but programming announcements happen in March. The cherry blossom trees in the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park begin to flower in late March in a good year.
One Thing to Watch
Alcatraz tours book out two to three weeks in advance even in March. Book online through Alcatraz Cruises before you travel rather than hoping for last-minute availability at the pier. This is one of those things where off-season does not mean walk-up available. The early morning departure is the best for light on the island and the least crowded experience once you are there.
Our San Francisco travel guide covers the neighbourhoods, Alcatraz logistics, the best food markets, and how to navigate a city that rewards curiosity more than any standard tourist route.
