San Francisco in June has a reputation for fog, and it's earned. Karl the Fog (as locals call it) rolls in most mornings, particularly on the western side of the city near the ocean and the Golden Gate. By afternoon it often clears. This surprises visitors expecting California sunshine, but it's not a dealbreaker: the city is remarkable in any weather and SF Pride at the end of the month is one of the best events in the US.
Weather
Temperatures sit between 12-18°C in June, which is genuinely cool by summer expectations. The fog affects the western neighbourhoods and the bridge most in the mornings. The eastern and southern parts of the city (Mission, Noe Valley, Potrero Hill) are typically sunnier and warmer. Pack layers: a light jacket is essential every day. Tourists in shorts in June are a reliable way to spot people who didn't read this.
Crowds and Prices
San Francisco has recovered as a tourist destination and June brings solid visitor numbers. Alcatraz requires advance booking (days or weeks ahead depending on your timing) and doesn't have a casual drop-in option. The Golden Gate Bridge walk is always accessible and free. Accommodation prices are high by US city standards, though below New York.
What's On
SF Pride is the headline June event, typically running over the last weekend of the month with the main parade on Sunday. It's one of the original Pride events in the US and draws enormous crowds. The Castro, the Civic Center, and Market Street are the main locations. Beyond Pride, the city has a full programme of live music, food festivals, and outdoor events throughout June.
One Thing to Watch
San Francisco's neighbourhoods are very different from each other, and the city's social challenges (homelessness, tent encampments) are visible in certain areas, particularly around Civic Center, the Tenderloin, and parts of SOMA. This can be jarring for first-time visitors. Stay aware of your surroundings in those areas, and know that two blocks in any direction often changes the feel of a street significantly.
