San Francisco in October is a local's favourite and for good reason. The city follows its own climatic logic: summer in San Francisco is often cold and foggy, while October brings what locals call second summer, genuinely warm, clear days with much lower fog than June and July. If you've packed a summer trip expecting California warmth and got cold fog, October is your vindication.
Weather
Often the best weather of the year. Expect 18-22°C with lower humidity and clearer skies than the summer months. The fog, a defining San Francisco weather feature, retreats significantly in October. Views of the Golden Gate Bridge are much more reliable than in July. There are still cool evenings and a marine layer can linger in the mornings, but October afternoons are frequently excellent. Pack layers for the evenings but plan your days around clear, mild conditions.
Crowds and Prices
Moderate. San Francisco is busy year-round but October doesn't add the summer tourist peak. Hotel prices are more competitive than summer, particularly if you book ahead. The main attractions, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate, Fisherman's Wharf, are all busy year-round but October visits are more comfortable than the summer peak. The city's excellent restaurant and neighbourhood culture (the Mission, Hayes Valley, the Castro) operates year-round without seasonal variation.
What's On
The San Francisco Giants baseball season may extend into October playoffs depending on the season. Fleet Week, the annual US Navy air show over the bay, typically runs in early to mid-October and is spectacular viewed from almost anywhere along the waterfront. The Golden Gate Bridge views in October are at their most reliable, with the fog clearing properly for the first time since spring. Halloween is taken seriously in the Castro neighbourhood, with street events in late October.
One Thing to Watch
Alcatraz requires booking well in advance regardless of month. October is not significantly different from any other time of year in terms of Alcatraz availability: it sells out weeks or months ahead. If visiting Alcatraz is part of your San Francisco plan, book it before you book anything else. The evening audio tour, which some visitors find more atmospheric than the daytime version, books out even further ahead.
