San Francisco in January is a good option for visitors who want the city without the summer tourist peak. The city is cooler and wetter than summer, but the key attractions, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, the cable cars, and the neighbourhoods, are all fully operational. January is one of the quieter months for tourism and one of the more affordable.

Weather

January temperatures average 10°C to 14°C. San Francisco's famous fog is common, and the city can be grey and damp for stretches. Rain is more likely in January than in summer. Cold evenings and foggy mornings are typical. A waterproof jacket and layers are sensible. The Golden Gate Bridge has its own micro-climate and can be completely fogged over, which is both frustrating and iconic depending on your mood.

Crowds and Prices

January is low season. Alcatraz ferry tickets are easier to get than in summer, though advance booking is still recommended. Hotel prices on Union Square and in the Fisherman's Wharf area are lower. The city's tech workforce keeps some demand year-round, but the tourist portion drops significantly.

What's On

The San Francisco Flower and Garden Show is typically in spring, not January. January is relatively quiet for events. The city's restaurant scene, including Mission District taquerias and the Ferry Building Marketplace, operates fully. Chinese New Year preparations begin in late January in the Chinatown district, with the parade typically in February.

One Thing to Watch

Rain can make outdoor sightseeing like the Muir Woods day trip or a Golden Gate walk less appealing. Build some indoor flexibility into your itinerary, particularly for the first half of any day when fog and drizzle are most likely.
