San Francisco in July regularly surprises visitors who arrive expecting California summer and find themselves reaching for a jacket at noon. The city's famous fog, which locals call Karl, settles heavily over the city through June and July, burning off by afternoon some days and staying all day on others. This is not a warning to avoid July; it's an essential briefing so you pack correctly and choose the right neighbourhoods for outdoor time.
Weather
Temperatures average 15°C to 18°C at the coast and in the Sunset and Richmond districts. The Mission, the Castro, and the East Bay can be 5°C to 8°C warmer as they sit beyond the fog line. July is technically San Francisco's coldest month. The fog typically burns off inland by midday; the waterfront and Ocean Beach remain grey later. Evenings are cool, around 12°C to 14°C, and genuinely chilly if you've left your layer behind. Pack layers and a windproof jacket regardless of the calendar.
Crowds and Prices
July is peak tourist season in San Francisco despite the weather. Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge walkway are all busy throughout the month. Alcatraz requires advance booking; July slots sell out weeks ahead. Hotel prices are at their seasonal peak, particularly in Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf areas. The Mission, Lower Haight, and the Outer Sunset offer better value with stronger local character.
What's On
July 4th is the city's major July event: fireworks over the bay from the Embarcadero and Crissy Field draw large crowds and offer spectacular views of the bridge. SF Pride celebrations typically fall in late June but the city's summer festival season is in full momentum through July. The Outside Lands music festival falls in August but advance buzz builds in July. Dolores Park in the Mission is at its most social and lively on summer weekends when the fog clears.
One Thing to Watch
The Golden Gate Bridge walk takes most visitors north to Marin headlands via the bridge; this side is in fog more reliably than the city side. The views looking back to the San Francisco skyline from the Marin side are actually the better photograph, but dress warmly for it. The bridge itself is significantly colder and windier than the city; more than one visitor has crossed it in a t-shirt and regretted it significantly.
