San Francisco in summer is the most common destination in the world where visitors arrive expecting California heat and are completely blindsided by what they find. Mark Twain reportedly described the coldest winter he ever spent as a summer in San Francisco, and while the quote's attribution is disputed, the observation is accurate. June through August is fog season. Karl the Fog, as locals affectionately call it, rolls in from the Pacific most mornings, keeps temperatures in the 14 to 18 degree range, and can persist all day in some parts of the city. Pack layers. Warm ones.
The Heat/Weather Strategy
San Francisco's fog pattern is localised and real. The western neighbourhoods, the Sunset and Richmond districts, Inner Sunset, and Ocean Beach, can be 10 degrees cooler than the Mission District or the Castro on the same day. The bay itself is often clearer than the coast. Mornings are typically foggiest; afternoons sometimes clear to reveal warmer temperatures, especially inland.
When fog burns off, San Francisco days are genuinely lovely and mild. But you cannot count on it, and even clear afternoons in the city rarely reach 22 degrees in June and July.
City-Specific Must-Haves
A warm mid-layer is not optional in San Francisco summer. A fleece, a merino jumper, or a light down jacket is the most useful single item you can pack. Visitors who pack only T-shirts and lightweight summer clothing are cold within an hour of arriving.
A windproof outer layer handles the bay wind, which is particularly strong at the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and along the waterfront at Fisherman's Wharf. The fog produces dampness rather than rain, so water-resistant is sufficient without requiring a full waterproof.
Comfortable walking shoes with grip for the famous hills. San Francisco's gradients are steep and significant. The steps from Fisherman's Wharf up through North Beach to Coit Tower, the Filbert Steps, and the streets of Twin Peaks all require shoes with real grip, particularly when damp from fog.
Layers you can remove: the micro-climate differences mean you might go from a foggy 14-degree Ocean Beach to a sunny 22-degree Mission in 20 minutes on the MUNI. Dressing in removable layers is the correct strategy.
Sunscreen for clear afternoons and for the East Bay excursions, where fog rarely penetrates and sun is consistent.
What to Leave Behind
Light summer clothing as your primary wardrobe is the classic San Francisco mistake. Pack it as a secondary option for the warmest afternoons but not as the plan.
Heavy winter gear is also unnecessary: it is not freezing, just cool and damp. The right layers handle everything.
