San Francisco in February: What to Expect

San Francisco in February is not the Golden Gate in sunshine that the postcards suggest. It can be foggy, cool, and occasionally wet. But the city's cultural calendar, its neighbourhood diversity, and Chinese New Year, which often falls in February, make it a legitimate winter destination. Crowds are lower than summer, hotel prices are more reasonable, and Alcatraz, the cable cars, and the Ferry Building are all fully operational. February is not San Francisco at its most photogenic, but it is San Francisco at its most authentic.

Weather

February averages 8C to 14C. The city's famous fog rolls in particularly in the early morning and evening. Rain is possible, more so than July or August. A medium-weight jacket, a light waterproof, and layers are the practical approach. San Francisco microclimates mean the Mission District can be warm and sunny while the Richmond is foggy at the same time.

Crowds and Prices

Lower than summer. Alcatraz still requires advance booking (often days or a week ahead rather than weeks), but availability is better. The cable cars are rideable without the extreme summer queues. Flights from the UK and Europe are cheaper than in summer. Hotel prices in SOMA, the Mission, and downtown are lower than peak months.

What's On

Chinese New Year is the February headline. The Chinatown celebrations, the parade down Grant Avenue, and the wider city festivity make this one of the largest Chinese New Year events outside Asia. Depending on the year, the parade falls in February or early March. The San Francisco Independent Film Festival (SF IndieFest) also runs in February.

One Thing to Watch

San Francisco's hills are unforgiving in wet weather. The streets around Nob Hill, Russian Hill, and Twin Peaks become slippery when wet. This is relevant for walking and particularly for cyclists. The flatlands of the Embarcadero, the Mission, and the Marina are safer options on wet days. Cable cars handle the hills but have limited capacity and the stops can be crowded.
