San Francisco CityPASS: Is the Tourist Card Worth Buying?

The San Francisco CityPASS covers the California Academy of Sciences, de Young Museum, Alcatraz, and more. Does the maths work? What it includes, what it costs, and when to buy vs. skip it.

The San Francisco CityPASS is a bundled attractions ticket covering several major sights. Like any tourist pass, its value depends entirely on whether you'd have visited those specific attractions anyway, and at full price. This is a straightforward cost comparison.

What the CityPASS Includes

The San Francisco CityPASS (C3 version, the most common) covers three attractions from a choice of six, plus three days of unlimited Muni transport. The attractions to choose from (prices are approximate individual rates):

California Academy of Sciences: $40
The Exploratorium (science museum on the Embarcadero): $42
Bay Cruise (Blue and Gold Fleet, 1-hour bay tour): $40
de Young Museum: $30
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA): $30
Aquarium of the Bay (Pier 39): $30

The C3 CityPASS price: approximately $99 adults. You choose three from the list above plus the Muni days.

The Maths

If you choose California Academy of Sciences ($40) + Exploratorium ($42) + Bay Cruise ($40) = $122 in individual tickets. Add three days of Muni ($5 day pass x 3 = $15). Total if bought separately: $137. CityPASS: $99. Saving: approximately $38.

The saving is real but modest. The more consequential question is whether you'd visit all three attractions anyway.

When the CityPASS clearly makes sense: if your itinerary includes the Academy of Sciences, the Exploratorium, and a bay cruise, and you need Muni passes, the CityPASS is a straightforward saving.

When it doesn't: if your visit prioritises Alcatraz (not in the CityPASS — book separately regardless), the Mission District food scene, free attractions (Golden Gate Bridge walk, Alamo Square, Crissy Field), and only one or two paid museums.

What the CityPASS Doesn't Include

Alcatraz: not included. Book directly with Alcatraz City Cruises. This is the most common misconception about the pass.

Golden Gate Bridge: free regardless.

Cable cars: the Muni days cover cable cars, which is genuinely useful.

Museum free days: if your visit falls on a California Academy of Sciences free Wednesday or a de Young free Tuesday, the pass loses value. Check the free day schedules before buying.

The Go San Francisco Card

An alternative to CityPASS, covering more attractions including Alcatraz in some versions. More flexibility in what's covered but higher price and more complexity. Worth comparing on the Go City website if the CityPASS inclusions don't match your itinerary.

Practical Notes

The CityPASS is physical (mailed) or digital (email/app). The digital version is instant. Buy on the CityPASS website directly or through Viator.

The pass activates on first use and the Muni days run from first tap. Plan your highest-cost days for when the pass is active.

Our Take

Buy the CityPASS if your itinerary genuinely includes the California Academy of Sciences plus one or two others from the list, and you'll use the Muni days. Don't buy it to save money on two attractions — the saving is small and the constraints may be inconvenient. Alcatraz is always a separate booking.
