San Francisco is ringed by some of the most diverse natural landscapes in North America. Within 1.5 hours: old-growth redwood forest, wine country valleys, and Pacific coastline. Within 3.5 hours: Yosemite, one of the most significant national parks in the world. The three standard day trips each suit different priorities.
Muir Woods: The Redwoods, 1 Hour Away
Muir Woods National Monument is 18 km north of San Francisco in Marin County — a 560-acre stand of old-growth coast redwoods, some over 1,000 years old, rising up to 80 metres. The coastal fog that San Francisco finds irritating is the redwoods' water source, which is why they grow here and almost nowhere else.
The main Cathedral Grove loop takes about an hour; longer trails extend into the Marin headlands for full-day hiking. The tallest tree in the park is 76 metres.
The critical point: Muir Woods requires an advance reservation for parking. This is not optional — without a parking reservation, you will be turned away from the road. Book on Recreation.gov well before your visit. The shuttle from Sausalito or Marin City is the alternative to driving and avoids the parking issue entirely.
Entry: $16 adults. The park is managed by the National Park Service; the America the Beautiful pass covers entry.
What to expect: the grove is always cooler and damper than the surrounding area (typically 5–10°C cooler). Bring a layer. The ground is soft, the light filters through the canopy, and the scale of the trees produces a specific quiet that is worth experiencing for itself.
Napa Valley: Wine Country, 1.5 Hours Away
Napa Valley is 80 km northeast of San Francisco, a 55 km valley containing over 400 wineries producing primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot. It is among the most famous wine regions in the world following the 1976 Paris Tasting, when California wines outscored French wines in a blind tasting by French judges.
Self-drive: a rental car allows flexibility to visit multiple wineries. The Silverado Trail (eastern side of the valley) is less crowded than Highway 29 (the main road). Most wineries require reservations; book ahead.
Organised wine tours: the easier option for visitors who don't want to drive — several operators run day tours from San Francisco by coach, combining two or three winery visits with lunch. Viator has a broad range. Prices: $100–180 per person.
Getting there without a car: BART to Richmond, then Napa Valley Vine bus — feasible but slow (2.5 hours). Organised tour or hired car is more practical.
Best area for day trips: Carneros (southernmost, closest to San Francisco), Yountville (central, concentration of good restaurants including The French Laundry), Calistoga (northernmost, hot springs and spas).
Yosemite: The National Park, 3.5 Hours Away
Yosemite Valley is 300 km from San Francisco — a 12 km granite-walled valley with El Capitan (vertical granite face, 900 metres), Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall, and Yosemite Falls. It is one of the most photographed landscapes in America and one of the most visited national parks.
As a day trip it is long (7 hours of driving for 5–6 hours in the park) but possible. As an overnight stay, it is significantly better.
Entry reservation required: Yosemite requires a timed entry reservation during peak season (April to October), booked months in advance on Recreation.gov. Without a reservation, you cannot drive into the valley. This has been the system since 2020.
What to do in a day: Valley floor loop (driving or free shuttle), Mirror Lake trail (1.6 km to the lake reflection of Half Dome), Lower Yosemite Fall trail (1.6 km loop). The views from Valley View and Tunnel View are accessible from the road.
Organised day tours: Viator and others run coach tours from San Francisco, typically departing at 7 AM and returning at 10 PM. Exhausting but viable.
Our Take
Muir Woods for a half-day if the redwoods are on the list (they should be). Napa for a full-day trip if wine is a priority. Yosemite overnight if you can extend the trip — the valley at dawn before the day visitors arrive is a different place from the afternoon.
