San Francisco has two realistic airport options: San Francisco International (SFO), 30 km south of the city, and Oakland International (OAK), across the bay. A third option — San Jose (SJC) — is 80 km south and only makes sense with a specific reason. Which airport to use matters because the transfer experience is significantly different.
SFO: The Direct Option
SFO is the larger, more centrally connected airport. The BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station is inside the international terminal, connected by an AirTrain people mover from domestic terminals. BART runs directly to downtown San Francisco (Powell Street, Montgomery Street, Civic Center) in approximately 30 minutes.
BART fare from SFO to downtown: approximately $10. Trains run from around 5 AM to midnight on weekdays, with reduced hours on weekends. Load a Clipper Card at the station machines for seamless travel.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) from SFO to downtown: $35–55 depending on traffic and surge. The designated pickup area is outside the terminal — follow signs for "Rideshare." Taxis from the taxi stand: $45–65 to downtown.
The BART case: for solo travellers and pairs heading to downtown or the Mission, BART at $10 is by far the best option. Fast, reliable, avoids the freeway traffic.
Oakland (OAK): Cheaper Flights, Longer Transfer
Oakland Airport is on the east side of San Francisco Bay, served by many low-cost carriers (Southwest, Spirit, Frontier). Flights to Oakland are often significantly cheaper than SFO equivalents.
The transfer to San Francisco has two legs: the OAK BART Connector shuttle from the terminal to the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station ($3.75), then BART across the Bay Bridge tunnel to downtown San Francisco (approximately $4.50). Total journey around 45–50 minutes, total cost approximately $8–9. This is competitive with SFO BART in time and price, though the two-stage process is slightly less seamless.
Rideshare from OAK to downtown San Francisco: $40–65. The Bay Bridge can back up significantly at peak times.
The ferry option: an Uber from OAK to the Alameda Main Street ferry terminal takes around 15 minutes; the San Francisco Bay Ferry then crosses to the Ferry Building in 30 minutes. The ferry costs approximately $7. Scenic, practical in calm weather, requires more planning but gives you a bay crossing arrival rather than a tunnel one.
Which Airport to Use
Fly into SFO if the price difference is under $40 — the convenience of direct BART to downtown is worth it. Fly into Oakland if the fare difference is substantial, you're comfortable with the two-stage BART transfer, or you want the ferry arrival option.
Our Take
SFO with BART to downtown is the cleanest airport experience in California. Oakland makes financial sense when the fare gap is real. Avoid taxis from either airport — BART does the job at a fraction of the cost.
