The best time to visit Naples is April to June or September to October. The heat is manageable, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast are accessible without the summer intensity, and the city's street food culture is best enjoyed on foot, which requires temperatures below 35C. Summer works but demands planning and realistic expectations about the heat.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

  • January to February: Cool (around 9-13C) and quiet. The streets of the historic centre and the National Archaeological Museum are uncrowded. Cheaper accommodation, less competition for a table at any pizzeria.
  • March to April: Temperatures warm to 14-18C. Spring arrives on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Easter in Naples is a major event with processions and atmosphere. A strong shoulder window.
  • May to June: One of the best periods. Temperatures around 22-28C, long evenings, and the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii are operational and not yet at summer saturation. May is often the standout month.
  • July to August: Peak heat and tourism. Temperatures regularly hit 32-36C. The Amalfi Coast road is gridlocked on summer weekends. Pompeii in the midday heat is genuinely punishing. The coastal ferries to Capri and Ischia fill fast. Still doable with early starts.
  • September: Excellent. Temperatures ease to 26-29C, summer crowds thin from mid-month, and the city regains its rhythm. The sea is still warm.
  • October: A late warm season. Around 20-24C, the Amalfi Coast colours change, and Naples feels like itself again rather than a tourist destination.
  • November to December: Cooler and quiet. The Christmas presepe (nativity scene) tradition in the Via San Gregorio Armeno is uniquely Neapolitan and worth seeing.

Peak Season

July and August bring maximum Italian and international tourism. The Amalfi Coast access from Naples (by road or ferry) is at its most congested. Pompeii queues lengthen. Hotel prices rise across the Campania region. The city itself handles it, but the surrounding daytrip infrastructure is under strain.

Shoulder Season

May and September are the most rewarding windows. May has the edge for Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast: the sites are fully open, the ferry routes run fully, and the crowds have not yet reached summer levels. September adds the benefit of post-summer price drops while the weather stays warm.

What to Avoid

The peak August heat at Pompeii: the ancient site offers very little shade and the combination of 35C heat and exposed terrain makes a midday visit difficult. Go first thing in the morning or save it for September. Also, the Amalfi Coast road on summer weekends is a traffic experience that can turn a 20km drive into a multi-hour ordeal.
