Alcatraz Island sits 2.4 km offshore in San Francisco Bay, clearly visible from the waterfront. Between 1934 and 1963 it operated as a federal penitentiary for prisoners deemed too dangerous or escape-prone for other facilities — Al Capone, Robert Stroud (the Birdman), Machine Gun Kelly. The facility closed when the cost of running an island prison became untenable. The island is now a National Park, and the ferry and tour are among the most popular attractions in California.

Booking: Do It Well in Advance

Alcatraz tickets sell out two to four weeks in advance, routinely. The ferry is operated by Alcatraz City Cruises (the official concessionaire for the National Park Service) and departs from Pier 33 at Fisherman's Wharf.

Book directly on the Alcatraz City Cruises website as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. Do not leave this for arrival. Walk-up tickets are occasionally available but cannot be relied upon for any specific date.

Night tours sell out further in advance than day tours — sometimes six to eight weeks. If a night tour is specifically what you want, it is the first booking to make.

Ticket prices (including ferry): approximately $47 for adults daytime, $60 for the evening/night tour.

The Cellhouse Audio Tour

The Cellhouse Audio Tour, included with the ticket, is narrated by former Alcatraz inmates and guards — the actual people who lived and worked there. The format is a self-guided walk through the cellblock with audio triggered at marked points. It covers the daily routine of prisoners, notable escape attempts (none successful from the water), the cell that held Al Capone, and the 1962 Morris-Anglin escape (the most sophisticated attempt, featuring papier-mâché dummy heads).

The audio tour is one of the better museum audio experiences in the United States. Allow 2–2.5 hours on the island for the full experience.

Night Tours

The evening tour operates in the dark, covers areas of the island not included in the day tour, and includes a ranger-guided programme in addition to the audio tour. The island at night, with the San Francisco skyline lit up across the water and the cold bay wind, is a distinctly different experience from the daytime visit.

If you can get night tour tickets, take them over the day tour.

What to Bring

The island is cold even in summer — San Francisco Bay generates its own wind and the temperature on the island is consistently lower than the city. Bring a jacket regardless of the mainland forecast. The terrain involves a steep uphill walk from the ferry dock to the cellhouse. Comfortable shoes.

Getting There

Ferry from Pier 33, Fisherman's Wharf. The crossing takes 15 minutes. Ferries run throughout the day with a schedule on the booking site. Last return ferry is clearly marked on your ticket.

Our Take

Book the night tour if available. Otherwise the day tour is essential. The Cellhouse Audio Tour is genuinely excellent. Do not visit San Francisco without going to Alcatraz — it sells out for a reason.
