Warsaw has two airports. Chopin Airport (WAW) handles most international flights and sits 10km southwest of the city centre. Modlin Airport (WMI) is 35km north and used primarily by Ryanair. The airport you land at determines everything about your transfer options — check before you travel.

From Chopin Airport (WAW): The Main Routes

SKM Train: the fastest and cheapest option. Trains depart from a dedicated platform in the airport's underground level, accessed directly from arrivals. Line S3 runs to Warsaw Central (Warszawa Centralna) in 20–25 minutes, continuing to other central stations. Frequency: every 10–30 minutes depending on time of day. Ticket: 4.40 PLN (under £1) — the same ticket used on Warsaw's buses, trams, and metro. Validate at the yellow machine before boarding.

This is the right choice for almost everyone travelling alone or in pairs with manageable luggage.

Bus 175 (daytime) / N32 (night): the bus option follows a different route through the city, stopping at more points — including along Aleje Jerozolimskie and into the Old Town area. Journey time: 35–45 minutes in normal traffic. Same 4.40 PLN ticket. Slower than the train but useful if the SKM stop isn't near your accommodation.

Taxi (official rank): fixed-rate taxis from the airport charge around 45–60 PLN (£8–12) to central Warsaw. Use the official taxi rank outside arrivals (look for the yellow "Taxi" desk, not touts approaching you inside). The fixed rate is displayed and pre-agreed — no meter surprises.

Uber: significantly cheaper than taxis at roughly 25–35 PLN for the same journey. The pickup zone is a short walk from the terminal (follow the Uber/rideshare signs). Works reliably at Chopin.

From Modlin Airport (WMI): Plan Ahead

Modlin is a budget-airline airport with no direct rail link to the city. Options:

ModlinBus: direct shuttle to Warsaw Central Station, roughly 60–75 minutes, 33 PLN. The most straightforward option.

Train connection: a shuttle bus from Modlin Airport to Modlin railway station, then a Koleje Mazowieckie train to Warsaw (Warszawa Gdańska or Centralna). Combined journey around 55–70 minutes and similar cost. Requires a connection, which adds complexity.

Taxis from Modlin to Warsaw cost 120–150 PLN — workable for groups but not good value for solo travellers.

The One Thing to Know

Warsaw's public transport ticket (4.40 PLN) must be validated before use. The validators are yellow/orange machines on the platform or bus — stamp your ticket as you board. Inspectors operate at the airport and throughout the city, and the spot fine is 266 PLN.

Our Take

SKM from Chopin Airport: 25 minutes, 4.40 PLN, no decisions to make. Uber if you have heavy luggage and are with someone to split the cost. ModlinBus from Modlin — there is genuinely no better option.
