Warsaw in March is cold and underrated. The Polish capital is a city that rewards proper attention: its rebuilt Old Town, its extraordinary POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, its cafe culture, and its vodka bar scene are all excellent year-round. March brings low prices, minimal tourist crowds, and a city that feels like it has not been polished for visitors' consumption. For travellers who value authenticity over sunshine, Warsaw in March is a strong choice.
Weather
March in Warsaw is genuinely cold. Temperatures range from -1°C to 1°C at night to 6°C to 8°C during the day. Snow is possible throughout March, particularly early in the month. Cold wind and grey skies are the realistic expectation. Pack a proper winter coat, warm layers, and waterproof boots. Late March can bring milder days reaching 11°C to 13°C and the occasional genuinely spring-like afternoon, but plan for cold and be pleasantly surprised when it relents.
Crowds and Prices
Warsaw in March is extremely quiet for tourists. The Old Town, the Royal Castle, Lazienki Park, and the Warsaw Uprising Museum are all accessible without waiting. The city's central restaurants and cafes are busy with locals, not tourists, which is exactly the right way to experience a city. Flights from the UK are cheap and accommodation across the city is priced well below Western European equivalents at any time of year. March undercuts even those prices.
What's On
Warsaw's cultural calendar in March has theatre, classical music at the Philharmonic, and art exhibitions. The Opera House (Teatr Wielki) runs a full spring programme. Women's Day on 8 March is celebrated publicly in Poland and flowers appear across the city. The Warsaw Beer Festival sometimes falls in March or April, though check current dates. The POLIN Museum has excellent permanent and temporary exhibitions that can occupy a full day regardless of season.
One Thing to Watch
Lazienki Park, one of Warsaw's finest green spaces and home to the famous Chopin monument and outdoor piano concerts, holds its Sunday concerts from May through September. In March the park is open and beautiful in a winter-bare way, but the concerts are not running. If the outdoor Chopin concerts are on your list, May through September is the window. The park is still worth visiting in March for a morning walk away from the city centre.
Our Warsaw travel guide covers the Old Town, the POLIN Museum, the best vodka bars, and the practical details for a city that punches significantly above its tourist reputation.
