Warsaw is one of Europe's most underrated city break destinations, and May is a strong month to visit. The city's parks and gardens are at their best, the weather is warm, and you're visiting a capital with a genuinely extraordinary history, a completely reconstructed Old Town, and one of Europe's most moving museums, the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. It's also very good value.
Weather
Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C in May, with warm sunny days and occasional rain. A light waterproof jacket is useful but May is one of Warsaw's better months for weather. The Royal Lazienki Park, with its palace on the water and open-air Chopin concerts, looks exceptional in late spring.
Crowds and Prices
Warsaw attracts fewer international tourists than Krakow, which makes May a comfortable and unhurried experience. The main sites are accessible without significant queuing. Accommodation is very affordable. Food and drink are excellent value. It's a city that rewards curiosity and exploration without the logistical challenge of more heavily visited European capitals.
What's On
1 May is a public holiday in Poland (Labour Day). 3 May is Constitution Day, another public holiday celebrating the 1791 constitution. The combination creates a long weekend that draws domestic visitors to Warsaw and gives the city a festive atmosphere. Some businesses close on public holidays.
Chopin Piano Recitals in Lazienki Park begin in May and run on Sunday afternoons through the summer. They're free, outdoor, and one of Warsaw's most distinctive cultural experiences. The concert setting, under an open sky in the park, with a backdrop of trees and the Chopin Monument, is unlike anything else in Europe.
One Thing to Watch
The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Warsaw Rising Museum are two of the most significant and emotionally demanding museums in Europe. Both require more time and emotional energy than a casual visit. Plan at least three hours for each and don't rush them. The Warsaw Rising Museum in particular covers events of profound importance with exceptional depth. Schedule these visits on days when you're not also cramming in four other sites.
