Valencia spring arrives earlier than most of Spain and stays warmer than people expect. March sits at 16-20C: genuinely warm, often sunny, with the Mediterranean coast already pleasant enough for long walks along the beach and outdoor lunches in the Ruzafa neighbourhood. April reaches 18-22C and is excellent: Las Fallas has passed, the city is calmer, the light on the old city architecture is extraordinary. By May you are at 22-26C and Valencia is moving toward the summer warmth that makes it such a popular beach destination. Spring is the ideal window: warm enough to fully enjoy the city, before the full summer heat and the crowds that come with it.

The Layering Approach

Valencia spring is the sunniest and warmest early-spring destination on the Iberian Peninsula. The layering demands are light compared to northern European cities: daytime from March is already warm enough for short sleeves in direct sun. The main layering consideration is the evening: Valencia evenings in March and April cool down noticeably after sunset, and sitting at an outdoor terrace at 10pm (which is perfectly normal in Valencia) requires a layer. A light jacket or structured cardigan for evenings covers March through May without needing anything heavier. The Mediterranean breeze can also make seafront areas cooler than the city centre, so a jacket for Las Arenas or Malvarrosa beach evenings is useful even in May.

City-Specific Essentials

Sun cream from March: Valencia has more annual sunshine hours than almost anywhere in Spain, and the spring UV starts early. SPF 30-50 from March for outdoor days, particularly at the beach and in the open City of Arts and Sciences complex where there is minimal shade.

Sunglasses: Non-negotiable from the moment you arrive. Quality UV protection.

Comfortable walking shoes: Valencia is a very walkable city: the old city, El Carmen neighbourhood, Ruzafa, and the Turia Gardens riverbed (converted to a park) all reward time on foot. The streets are less aggressively cobbled than Lisbon or Rome, but cushioned comfortable shoes handle a full day better than fashionable ones.

Light jacket for evenings: For March and April primarily, but still useful in May for coastal evenings.

Swimwear from April: The Mediterranean water temperature in April is around 16-17C, cool but swimmable for determined swimmers. By May it is more pleasant. Pack swimwear and you will find opportunities to use it.

A light, versatile outfit for evenings: Valencia has a good restaurant and bar scene, particularly in Ruzafa. Smart casual covers everything.

Reusable water bottle: Tap water is safe. In the spring heat, staying hydrated matters.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy coats and winter layers: Not needed at any point in Valencia spring. A light jacket for evenings is the maximum required.

Multiple pairs of jeans: Light trousers and one denim option cover Valencia spring comfortably.

Formal shoes: Valencia's social culture is relaxed. Smart casual and comfortable shoes cover everything.

Sandals as your only shoe in March: Temperatures are warm but having one supportive shoe option for long walking days is still worthwhile.
