Valencia in September is a genuine case for visiting ahead of the better-known Spanish cities. The beach is still excellent, the crowds are far below Barcelona levels, and the city's food scene, which includes the home of paella, is in full seasonal swing. September also brings MotoGP to the circuit outside the city.
Weather
September in Valencia runs between 20 and 27°C, with warm, sunny days and a sea temperature still perfect for swimming at La Malvarrosa and El Saler beaches. It's a step down from August's heat without losing anything that makes a beach city enjoyable. Evenings are warm and comfortable for the outdoor dining culture that Valencia does very well. Pack summer clothes and a light layer for evenings late in the month.
Crowds and Prices
Valencia doesn't have the same visitor saturation as Barcelona, but summer still brings its share of package tourists and beach visitors. September is a clear step down from the August peak. The Mercado Central, the City of Arts and Sciences complex, and the Barrio del Carmen historic centre all become more comfortable to visit. Hotels and apartments are significantly cheaper than Barcelona for a comparable experience. September keeps prices below the summer peak.
What's On
MotoGP at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, just outside Valencia, takes place in late September or early November depending on the year's race calendar. When it falls in September, it draws a significant motorsport crowd to the city and is worth checking for your travel dates. The Valencia Fashion Week sometimes runs in September. The grape harvest in the surrounding Valencian Community wine regions happens through the month, with the Utiel-Requena designation running harvest events.
One Thing to Watch
The paella etiquette question is real and worth knowing before you order. Authentic Valencian paella is traditionally made with rabbit, chicken, and green beans, not seafood. Seafood paella (paella de marisco) exists but is not the Valencia original. The best paella restaurants in Valencia often require advance booking, lunch is the traditional service (not dinner), and the Albufera lake area south of the city is where the most authentic versions are served. Our guide covers this in detail.
