Valencia in May is one of Spain's best-kept secrets for timing. The city is genuinely warm, the beaches are beginning to come into their own, and you're visiting at a point where the tourist numbers are building but haven't hit the July and August peak. It's also significantly more affordable than Barcelona for a comparable Mediterranean city experience. May is a strong month to go.

Weather

Temperatures range from 16°C to 24°C in May, with plenty of sunshine and low rainfall. The Mediterranean climate delivers reliable warm days, and the Mediterranean sea is cool but swimmable for many by late May, typically around 19°C to 20°C. Light summer clothing works well with a layer for evenings.

Crowds and Prices

Valencia draws fewer tourists than Barcelona and Madrid, which means May crowds are very manageable. The City of Arts and Sciences, the Central Market, and the old city barrios are all accessible without significant queuing. Accommodation is cheaper than in the two bigger Spanish cities for equivalent quality. The Malvarrosa beach area and the Turia Gardens (a former riverbed turned into a 9km linear park) are both pleasant in May without being crowded.

What's On

1 May is a public holiday in Spain. Some businesses close but Valencia keeps running for tourists.

Las Fallas, Valencia's famous fire festival, takes place in mid-March, not May. But the city retains its lively outdoor culture well into late spring. The Central Market and the Mercado de Colón are both excellent and in full swing through May.

Volvo Ocean Race has visited Valencia historically. Check whether any major sailing or motorsport events are scheduled during your May dates, as they can affect accommodation prices.

One Thing to Watch

Valencia's paella scene requires some local knowledge to navigate. The city invented the dish, but tourist-facing restaurants near the Central Market and the old town vary considerably in quality. Authentic Valencian paella, made with rabbit and chicken rather than seafood, is the traditional version, and the best is found further from the tourist centre. The beach area restaurants can be good but check recommendations carefully. Spending significant money on a mediocre paella in the wrong restaurant is avoidable with a bit of research.
